Managing Depression with Seasonal Affective Disorder

There are literally millions of people that experience depression as a result of seasonal affective disorder each year. However, over half of these people do not realize that this is the cause for depression. This form of depression often occurs during the winter months of the year. If a person resides in an area that has limited sunlight during the winter months, such as Alaska, they have a higher chance of developing seasonal affective disorder, or SAD. If you wish to effectively manage depression with seasonal affective disorder, it is important to first understand the condition. Here, you will find a lot of crucial information on this particular disorder and how to deal with it in a constructive way.

It is possible to experience a variety in symptoms when you have SAD. Many people experience extreme fatigue. Other people may experience muscle weakness and soreness. Many other common symptoms may occur with this particular disorder as well. These include: changes in appetite, weight gain or loss in weight, issues with concentration, severe mood swings, and even changes in the sleep cycle. If you find that you are experiencing any of these issues coupled with depression, it is important that you seek the assistance of a medical professional. These professionals will be able to determine if you are affected with seasonal affective disorder and assist you in treatment methods that can work for you.

There are many different ways that a person can manage depression with seasonal affective disorder. Treatment methods are based on many determining factors. This may include the severity of the depression, the overall amount of light that a person is exposed to, the medical history of the person who is being treated, and if the person experiences suicidal tendencies. Many doctors may request that you attend counseling sessions. Some therapy may include light therapy. Many doctors may prescribe antidepressants. There are some doctors, however, that will simply inform you to subject yourself to more sunlight during daytime hours.

In addition to the different types of therapy that can be administered by a medical professional, there are other things that you can do to manage depression with seasonal affective disorder. One of the first things that you can do is to ensure that the inside of the home is kept bright during the day. You may want to purchase light colored curtains to place on the windows in the home. Many people like to shut the curtains, or place dark colored curtains on the window during the winter season. Doing this can greatly affect any depression that is associated with SAD. However, allowing light to shine brightly in the home during the winter months will reduce the effects that SAD may have on you.

Managing depression during the winter months does not have to be difficult. Basically, it is important to ensure that you get plenty of sunlight during the winter. Additionally, if you feel that you are overwhelmed by the depression, you should seek medical help. From there, you will receive various resources that may assist you soothing the symptoms associated with seasonal affective disorder.
